Flickr Plugin for Learnerblogs
For our class blog we use Learnerblogs – now I have become slowly more frustrated with what can be added to a blog post, as embedding web 2.0 and other media would be really useful. But I have just discovered this excellent Flickr wordpress plugin for Learnerblogs.
As you can see from the image above a small Flickr bar is added to the writing screen. The children can add relevant images to their posts that have been uploaded to our Flickr account.
There is also a tag related search option so the children can filter to exactly the photos or images they need. I have also tried to delete the pre-configured username and just do a tag related search on its own and it works. So essentially the children have a way to do tag related Flickr searches right there under their post

So tagging…I think that this should be something that the children are very aware of and perhaps I can bring in other tagging topics such as del.icio.us.
In my eyes Flickr seems to be developing into a great classroom resource, but I think that the children should be contributing to the class image set as well. I would like them to know the whole process of taking the digital image, uploading to the computer and to Flickr, tagging and naming correctly, organising into sets, geotagging when appropriate, and then using the image in their work.

Back to school…

Well the summer holidays are over and here in the UK we are back to school this week for a new academic year.
This is a brief post to say how helpful I have just found the Flickr resource. We are doing some short work on settings, as do most year groups, and I found myself

What I want to do on my blog, is every few hours take the oldest post and move it to the
front of the queue, all automatically. Anyone know if there is a plugin that can do this or
a simple way to set up another plugin to do this (use my own feed perhaps)?

I agree that the children need to go through the process of getting the images, uploading etc to understand the how and why. I start with primary 2 children taking the digital pictures so that by the time they reach primary 7 they have mastered the whole concept without teacher support.

Hi Rich,
to get the Flickr plugin working go to SITE ADMIN > from the DASHBOARD go to PLUGINS and you should see a plugin titled “WP Flickr Post Bar” with the description: “Displays a Flickr bar at the top of your edit screen, which allows you to easily add Flickr photos to your posts with one click. Configure… By Joe Tan.”
Activate the plugin by clicking the link on the left of the description – them make sure you click on the CONFIGURE link, add your Flickr account name and choose from a few options, number of pics to display and what size to add them in as a default.
The in the WRITE screen you should see the Flickr bar load up

By the way – the only other grumble I have with Learnerblogs is it’s lack of support for other web 2.0 media (so no Flickr badge for example) I just wish it was a bit moe flexible like that. Maybe it will also change as edublogs has had an upgrade.

Where did you get hold of the flickr plugin?
My class have a learnerblogs account but their username doesn’t have a blog – they can just post on the class one – so that is hassle re: photos etc, but if they can pick one from a flickr account – then great!
What other LearnerBlog frustrations do you have?
