Robin Pecknold&#8217;s lyrics (Fleet Foxes) from Helplessness Blues have been ringing in my ears during most of my recent car journeys. <a href=\"https:\/\/edte.ch\/blog\/2011\/02\/11\/what-is-the-purpose-of-education\/\">When I wrote<\/a> about the <a href=\"http:\/\/purposed.org.uk\/\">purpose of education<\/a>, the ongoing discussion made me <a href=\"https:\/\/edte.ch\/blog\/2011\/02\/11\/what-is-the-purpose-of-education\/#comment-145256063\">recall them once again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The opening two verses\/stanzas seem to sum up what can happen in education in the course of about\u00a010 years.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I was raised up believing<br \/>\nI was somehow unique<br \/>\nLike a snowflake distinct among snowflakes<br \/>\nUnique in each way you can see<\/p>\n<p>And now after some thinking<br \/>\nI&#8217;d say I&#8217;d rather be<br \/>\nA functioning cog in some great machinery<br \/>\nServing something beyond me<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Helplessness Blues\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/4UkynNKM3QAFnYukL8Udi6?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The question I suppose is: do our education systems make children believe they are snowflakes or cogs?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What a beautiful line to start a song.
