David and TomWhen I visited the Scottish Learning Festival last week I was very fortunate to be met from the plane by David Noble of the extremely popular Booruch podcast. David and I have been online working colleagues for a long time now and he was in fact the very first person to bookmark this blog in delicious. At the TeachMeet event David presented in the breakout sessions about his thesis project which he is looking for support. He has always been very generous and supportive to me and so I would urge you to help David if you can with his project, which he himself explains about below.

I would like to invite you to participate in the edonis project which commences at the start of November. edonis (educators online impact study) will run for at least three years, identifying, for example:

  • Trends in educators’ use of online communication
  • impact on teaching and learning, and professional development
  • good practice
  • implications for the learning sector and government.

Your involvement would centre on:

  • Replying to a brief fortnightly emailed question
  • monthly; completion of a brief online survey
  • termly; responding to stimulus eg image, video, comment
  • yearly; participating in a one-hour online discussion relating to the findings of the study
  • a one-to-one interview with myself during the period of research.

There is a ‘community of practice’ running alongside my research (at http://edonis.ning.com), which is intended to facilitate participants’ learning through: regular reporting and sharing of data and findings; opportunities to network with fellow educations and participate in focused discussions; and access to the final version of the thesis.

The study will form part of my doctoral thesis, provisionally titled, “Educators’ use of the social web to support teaching and learning, and professional development”. Your participation will be recognised within the published thesis and with a yearly Professional Development (CPD/PD) certificate. At each stage of the study, you will be able to choose to annonymise your contribution.

EdTechRoundUp Podcast – Episode 2

edtechroundup logoI am pleased to announce the second of our EdTechRoundup podcasts is available for you to listen to. In this episode yours truly is at the helm alongside John Johnston. It was a great fun making the show and I was delighted to be working with John as he was instrumental in getting this blog off the ground in the early days.

In the ICT Buffet we explain about a range of current projects we are involved in with our classes. We discuss Voices of The World, Tumblr and the ManyVoices Twitter writing project.

John and I spend some time exploring the ways that we are using Google tools in our classroom and I explain how we have collaborated on a Google spreadsheet together. John explains how he is using digital still cameras to create small videos as a way to create a record of learning in science investigations.

edtechroundup logoI am pleased and excited to announce the release of the EdTechRoundUp podcast. We are a growing group of UK based educators committed to helping others implement the best educational technology has to offer.

EdTechRoundUp is a place where a group of UK-based educators come together for discussion and collaboration around the use of technology in education. We believe in pedagogically-sound uses of educational technology, but don’t believe in ramming Web 2.0 (or anything else for that matter) down people’s throats?

The inaugural show is available via the blog or through an iTunes feed. Sinclair Mackenzie and David Noble are at the helm for the first show and are joined by Joe Dale in a short interview about blogging.

Our aim is to deliver common sense advice and guidance that is practical to teachers – much of what we will talk about has been tried and tested with our classes. The shows will be hosted by two different people each week – to see who is involved please visit the contacts page on the wiki.

In the first show Sinclair and David discuss ClassTools.net and the problems of online content being blocked in schools. I have used the ClassTools site before and it is a great addition to your online toolkit – we hope you find the advice useful and the debate engaging.

I will be hosting the next show with John Johnston which will be available very soon.

A few months back I was lucky enough to stumble upon Ben and Joan’s Podcast. Predominantly about the use of the SMARTBoard in classrooms, but often branching off into the wider world of Web2.0 etc I really enjoyed listening to the show.
